Heat Exchanger

Two-stream adiabatic balance: ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃). Fill the four stream states and the calculator solves the missing enthalpy, temperature, or mass flow.

Frequently asked

How does the heat exchanger balance work?
For an adiabatic shell the hot-stream duty equals the cold-stream duty: ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃). Give three of the four states (two properties each) plus mass flows, and the calculator solves the missing enthalpy or mass flow on the other stream.
Can the shell lose heat?
Yes — enter the external heat loss Q̇ and the balance becomes ṁₕ(h₁ − h₂) = ṁ_c(h₄ − h₃) + Q̇.
Which streams are which?
Hot in → hot out is the hot stream (states 1→2); cold in → cold out is the cold stream (states 3→4). The sign convention follows the standard textbook layout.
